Ever-Green Energy to provide free services to help two colleges reduce their carbon footprints

Macalester College, Slippery Rock University to participate in 2020 Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality cohort

Saint Paul, Minn. – Ever-Green Energy today announced that Macalester College and Slippery Rock University have been selected for the organization’s Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality cohort. These institutions will receive free energy planning services as part of this higher education-focused program.

“During these challenging times, Ever-Green believes that our Roadmap program can help higher education partners continue their work to address climate change,” said Ken Smith, president and CEO of Ever-Green Energy. “This program recognizes the continued urgency of decarbonizing campuses and creating targeted and tangible plans to advance energy infrastructure.”

Ever-Green Energy launched the Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality program to help campus leaders create actionable plans to make their sustainability and carbon neutrality goals a reality. Higher education institutions were invited to apply for the program in June 2020, outlining their goals and the work they have done to date on advancing their energy infrastructure and campus programming.

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to bring together our team here at Slippery Rock University with Ever-Green Energy experts to expedite the planning process and continue leading the way toward meeting the Presidents’ Climate Commitment,” said Slippery Rock University President Bill Behre. “This project will enable us to update our plan to eliminate campus greenhouse gas emissions by 2037. We are grateful to West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund for its financial support of this program as well.”

The two institutions will work with Ever-Green Energy over the next year to map out plans, evaluate feasibility and lay out next steps.

“Macalester College is excited to partner with Ever-Green Energy to develop a long-term strategic plan that will allow us to achieve our energy and carbon reduction goals,” said David Wheaton, vice president of administration and finance at Macalester. “We’ve made great progress over the past several years towards carbon neutrality by implementing a wide range of targeted projects. We’re expecting that this relationship will help us bring a more systematic, integrated approach to this work that will help us uncover even more opportunities.”

As the need for climate resilience grows, higher education continues to lead the way in commitments to carbon reductions, seeking more energy-efficient operations and a more ambitious integration of renewable energy. This is the second year of the Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality program. The first cohort included the University of Minnesota Morris, the University of St. Thomas and the College of St. Benedict.
